1.Scope of Chemistry

Chlorine is a deadly poisonous gas employed on European battlefields in World war I. Sodium is a corrosive metal which burns upon contact with water.Together they make a placid and unpoisonous material, table salt! Why each of these substances has the properties it does is a subject called CHEMISTRY!

Carl Sagan

From very ancient times, people have sought to expand their understanding of matter and energy. From the sub-atomic to the galactic level, CHEMISTRY is a subject that encompasses everything that is within and outside us.

What is the air we breathe? What are the constituents of our food? Why is water so important to life? How do we synthesize medicines which cure people of various ailments? Diamond and graphite are both allotropes of carbon. Why do we have diamond rings and not graphite ones? What is the universe made up of? What goes inside every cell in our bodies? Why does silicon have such a great impact on the modern world economy? How do plants synthesize food? How does our body work? Chemistry answers all this and much more.

There are a total of 118 elements, 94 of which are naturally occurring. All matter in our universe is made up of these 94 elements. Chemistry is the study of all these elements and their compounds. It studies, analyzes, and quantifies the properties and behaviors of these substances.

Chemistry finds its application in all industries including pharmaceuticals, dyes, cosmetics, electronics, food & nutrition, agriculture, automobile, petrochemical, arms and ammunition, etc. Chemistry is at the heart of everything surrounding us!

This blog is dedicated to teaching concepts in chemistry. I shall try my level best to keep things simple and cover as many topics in chemistry as possible. I intend to cover topics from Organic, Inorganic, Analytical, and Physical chemistry. We shall soon begin to explore this wonderful subject …Till then,

Be a perpetual student of life and keep learning…
